DCD985L2 What type. 1 or 2? Damaged tag
AnsweredI’m in need of a new armature and brushes for a DCD985L2. The “model” tag is scraped up and the “type” is scraped off. Brushes and stator(field) are interchangeable between type 1 and type 2. However the armatures are not apparently. Type 1 calls for part # NO23147SV where as type 2 calls for part # N372159. As far as the armature is concerned, it must have the same physical dimensions seeing that the field and brushes are interchangeable between types 1 and 2. I’ve tried all avenues of help including calling the Dewalt 800 number for help but was told can’t help me without a “type” number. I DO have other info however that I would think help identify what “type” DCD985 I have. I have the drill broken down. This is what I do have. DATE CODE: 2012 48-49 PARTIAL SERIAL # 552(565?). ORIGINAL PART# etched into the original armature NO180321 followed by 1247. I would hope that with the info I have provided, somehow the “type” # can be figured out. Is the difference in the windings? Can I ohm out the armature windings? Would there be a difference there? I don’t want to buy new. This drill has served me well for better than 10 years without a single hiccup. Just needs brushes and armature. Too add, I’ve recently retired from contracting and don’t feel the need for new. Someone please tell me what I can do to identify what to look for or measure electrically on the original armature to distinguish it as a “type” 1 or 2. Thanks for any and all help. I couldn’t be happier with my Dewalt tools. I’ve used other brands and I’m sticking with Dewalt.

Hi Bill
Based on the date code you provided, possibly the type of your drill could be “Type 1” because the Type 1 are the oldest ones, but we can not guarantee that. Taking into account that the type info on the specs label is scraped off, we don't have any other way to confirm wheter is Type 1 or Type 2. That's the only way.
In this case, we would suggest checking this with a trained Service Center technician that can confirm the Type on your drill. Please have the nearest DEWALT service center to evaluate your tool to determine the best course of action to correct this issue. Thanks. Unfortunately any Dewalt “authorized” service center is too far away from me. I had hoped that providing the original part number etched on the original armature would have been a solid identifier. I’m old school and I can remember talking directly to a manufacturer’s tech, giving them an original part number, and the getting a response, “Oh yeah, that part was used in “xyz” model”. Your information though has provided me a good lead. Thank you for your quick response.
