Site Manager offers a powerful feature to flash the identify LED on Tool Connect™ Tools, Batteries, Connectors, and Tags. This is helpful to tell tools apart from one another or to find an asset that might be mixed in with other assets. However in rare circumstances you may encounter an error in Site Manager that the asset could not be identified. This error can occur for several reasons and some methods to address it are below.
The first reason why identify can fail is if you are physically too far from the asset or it its heavily obstructed from you. Bluetooth has a range of 100-150ft in open areas but this can vary dramatically based on site conditions. You can learn more about Bluetooth range here. Site Manager offers a scan feature to help detect the presence your Bluetooth enabled Tool Connect™ asset. This feature shows how strong the Bluetooth signal is relative to your device.
If your scan detects the asset but then the identify feature fails then the issue could be related to your iOS devices pairing history. If the pairing history for the asset has been removed then the asset will fail to identify. The reason why your device can scan the asset but not identify it is because when scanning for an asset you are just looking for the presence of its Bluetooth signal, the identify feature requires issuing a command to the asset. When the pairing history is removed from your device the asset cannot receive the command for the identify feature.
To correct this issue you will need to utilize a second device. This device can either an iOS or Android device.
Follow these steps:
- On the second device download Site Manager from the App Store
- Login with your Site Manager account on the second device
- You should see a list of your assets on the second device that mirrors your original device
- Tap the three dots on the right hand side of the asset you wish to identify to bring up the options
- Tap 'Identify'
- If you are using an iOS device you will be prompted to pair to the asset you are trying to identify. This is normal, the second device must create a connection to the asset you are trying to identify (this is the connection that was lost from your original device)
- The asset's identify light should flash and Site Manager will prompt you to look for the flashing LED
- Once you have found the asset you will next need to unpair it from your account in order to resolve the identify issue on your original device
- On the second device tap on the three dots on the right hand side of the asset you just identified
- Tap on the 'Unpair' option, Site Manager will warn you before you remove the asset
- After a few seconds the asset will disappear from your inventory
- You will want to remove pairing history of the asset from the Bluetooth settings on the second device
- To do this first leave the Site Manager app and open the Settings app and tap on Bluetooth
14. Next tap on the pairing history of the item you just removed
15. Then tap on the 'Forget This Device' which will remove the pairing history from the second device
16. Now that you have removed the asset and its pairing history from the second device, you can pair it back to your original device, follow these steps (2.2: Pairing and Linking DEWALT® Tool Connect™ Tools, Batteries, Tags, and Connectors(Tool Connect™ Site Manager))
