Battery exploded on me

I was out in the yard today just blowing leaves and cleaning up for spring, and out of nowhere one of the batteries I've been using started popping on the side and exploded. At first it was if the battery was just dying, like the charge was gone, then flames and smoke from the side. I don't know what to do here, and am considering throwing out the matching one. Any ideas? Help? How can I double check the other batteries I have? Are replacements and option?
